Two Students, Akintunde Olumide and Oladapo Olaoluwa of Ekiti State University(EKSU) have been sentenced to a 3 years Imprisonment by an Ekiti State High Court on Wednesday, for their involvement in secret cult- related activities.
Justice Mosun Abodunde in her judgment said the prosecution counsel had established a case of secret cult against the accused beyond reasonable doubt. Abodunde, who found the accused guilty as charged and convicted them accordingly, said the punishment would serve as deterrent to other students in higher institutions that they should always face their studies and SAY NO TO SECRET CULT ACTIVITIES. The accused, Akintunde Olumide and Oladapo Olaoluwa, faced a three count charge of stealing, assault and secret cult.
During interrogation at the Criminal Investigation Department, it was noted that the accused made confessional statements as members of Black Axe.
it was also noted that that the police found in their custody a small cutlass, black head warmer; black T-shirt and black trousers during investigation.
The judge held that the short cutlass could not be compared with the one used for agriculture or weeding grass.
“It is not a tool for education; it is a weapon of danger and destruction which should not be seen within the school premises,” she added.
The judge resolved two of the issues in favour of the accused and used the last count to sentence them to three years imprisonment without any option of fine.
Police prosecution, Mr Femi Falade, had told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on July 13, 2013, at a hotel in Iworoko area of Ekiti State.
According to him, the offence was punishable under Section 355, 4(1) of Criminal Code Laws of Ekiti State 2012 and Secret Cults (Abolition and Prohibition). The prosecution called four witnesses to prove his case, while the defendants also called three witnesses.
