Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has been named assistant coach of the Belgium national team.
He will work under former Everton boss Roberto Martinez, who replaced Marc Wilmots as Belgium head coach following Euro 2016.
The Frenchman coached Arsenal’s Under 18 team before he was forced to leave his role due to Arsene Wenger’s demands for Henry to leave his role as a pundit on Sky Sports.
Reacting to his appointment, Henry expressed his excitement to be called upon to work with Roberto Martinez as assistant coach of Belgium national team.
His words: “Honoured to be assistant coach @BelRedDevils. Thanks to Roberto Martinez & the Royal Belgian Football Association. Very excited. Can’t wait.”
Henry will be part of the backroom staff alongside Graeme Jones, who was Martinez’s assistant at Swansea, Wigan and Everton.
Roberto Martinez however welcomed the appointment of former Arsenal striker.
“Thierry is an important figure. He will bring something different. He agreed right away to join us,” Martinez said.
“He is someone who knows how to develop a collective mentality, how to work together to win. He won the World Cup in 1998 and has the experience to achieve great things.”
