The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday warned that it would not shift the stipulated date – October 1, 2016 – for the implementation of speed limiters in commercial vehicles.
The Corp Marshall, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, who gave the warning in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital at a public enlightenment forum for transport stakeholders in the state, stated that October 1, remains sacrosanct for the enforcement.
The warning confirms the recently declared October 1 2016 as deadline for drivers of commercial vehicles to install speed limiters – a move aimed at reducing ‘road mishap’ in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the Corp Marshall, the Assistant Corps Marshall in charge of policy, research and statistics, Dr. Michael Olagunju, who lamented the alarming statistics of road crashes in Nigeria highways, hinted that the speed limiting device would save Nigerians from loss of lives on the highways.
He quoted the Corps Marshall as saying that in 2015 alone over 12,077 road crashes were recorded out of which 5,400 people representing 68percent were said to have died as a result of over speeding alone.
Olagunji also expressed in dismay that most of the crashes would have been avoided if appropriate safety measures were being adopted by the motorists when plying on the highways.
He maintained that accident are caused not made, adding, “most of the road crashes are preventable, if we are able to bring down the speed, we will be saving a lot of lives on our highways.”
